Concept - Team 2

Our concept deals with the integration between the two components of the site, the existing community, and Elysian Park.  The key elements to accomplishing this integration are  the bridge, the community center, and the creation of gardens and terraces.  The community center, the gardens, and terraces are oriented so that they co-exists on both sections of the propriety.

The community  center  starts on the hill, continues through  the bridge and spills on to the other side of the site.  Besides serving as a circulation link between the two components of the site, the bridge also serves as a building containing meeting rooms, a library, and open spaces where people can relax and enjoy the view. The transition is completed by a procession of courtyards where different activities are held.  Elysian Park is incorporated through the creation of a hierarchy of open spaces that also spill over from the hill side into the more controlled part of the project.  This hierarchy is done through the size of the spaces and their accessability.  The program has been designed to create a wall against the industrial side of the site.  From this wall, the program starts to invade the open space creating a series of pockets which further helps define the hierarchy we would like to establish.  The retail is placed along Broadway for accessibility to those who do not inhabit the complex.  It also serves as a buffer between the noisy street and the housing.  The part of the program situated on the hill is designed and oriented to serve two purposes.  First, it reinforces the connection of the two parts of site A.  Last, it acts as a guide for the users up into Elysian park or toward the community center.
