Bob Hale
With over twenty years of diverse design, planning, and management experience within the context of highly visible and critically acclaimed architecture, Mr. Hale has a unique and broad background . His areas of particular expertise include urban, architectural and Interior design; strategic project planning and programming; master planning; project management; interface with regulatory agencies; and overall project leadership and client relations.
After graduating with honors from Tulane University in l977, Mr. Hale worked on a wide variety of projects in the San Francisco Bay area. He moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to attend UCLA's M.Arch II program in Urban Design, and he worked with Charles Moore on the design of a number of prize-winning competition schemes. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Dean's Prize for best design thesis.
In l98l, Mr. Hale joined Frank O. Gehry and Associates and, he became a Senior Associate in l982. He also became responsible for the operational management of the firm as well as for management of all phases of various individual projects. In l986, he was made a Principal of the firm. During his tenure there, Mr. Hale was responsible for managing the design of many of Frank Gehry's award winning projects in California and through-out the world, including: The Temporary Contemporary; Loyola Law School phases II through IV; Herman Miller's Western Regional Distribution Center; the Winton Residence; 360 Newbury Street in Boston; Chiat/Day offices in LA and Toronto; the Vitra Museum, Factory, and Office Buildings; the Weisman Museum at the University of Minnesota; the American Center in Paris; Festival Disney at Disneyland Europe; and the competition and schematic phases of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
In l993, Mr. Hale joined with his wife, interior designer Anne Greenwald, to form Hale & Greenwald architecture and design. Their individual and collaborative completed work includes residential, rehabilitation, commercial, and public sector projects that have been published and exhibited in various magazines and books such as Architectural Digest, Abitare, Interior Design, and Freestyle-The New Architecture and Design in Los Angeles, and the 100x100 exhibition .
Mr. Hale joined Universal Studios Hollywood as its Director of Design in 1994. He directed the design of the Jurassic Park Attraction, a new Main Entrance Complex, as well as numerous retail, food and beverage, and support facilities. In 1995 he was promoted to Executive Director of Design for the Universal City Master Plan Team where he has led the continuing development of a master plan for the 415 acre Universal City and the entitlement efforts of the team in creating a new zoning for the property, the Universal City Specific Plan. He has directed Universal's work with Rem Koolhaas and, he has recently led the development of corporate and infra-structural projects including a new vehicular circulation and entry complex, new corporate office facilities, and a portal for Universal City's new MTA station. He was recently named Vice-President of Design and Planning for the Universal Studios Recreation Group. In this new position he will lead design efforts for Universal's global expansion, as well as maintaining an overview of the development of Universal City.
Mr. Hale has taught at U.S.C. and U.C.L.A. He has lectured widely on his work, Universal City, other current trends in architecture. He edited and wrote GA ARCHITECT VOLUME 10, FRANK GEHRY. as well as the first volume of a complete works series yet to be published , Frank Gehry - the complete works, 1960 - 1980 .
