Interview with Nader Khalili of Cal-Earth Institute: Hesperia, California

Some of the best structures are seashells. The best color, the best texture, the best forms; and they are waterproof! And yet they are made out of only sea water, by a little creature that doesn't call itself the image of god as we do - we destroy the forests, build factories, sell this, sell that, just to build a small house. Why can't we as humans, who claim to be the image of God, make everything out of the earth, or water, air, fire? Somewhere we are not living up to our potential. We are not helping the students and grown-ups and kids to live their potential.

If you don't stick to the tradition of the things that are valuable to you, then why does each one of us need a father or a mother? When they get old they demand a lot, they tell you what to do, they are adamant. But what would you do without them? You don't put them away because they are not economically effective or viable. They are the soul of your life. You can not justify them or quantify them. Without them, life becomes very meaningless.

You do need to go out into the world to learn the value of what you have right where you are. It's just like your mother, your father, the people closest to you: you don't understand the value of that until you are broken from that unity.
