An introduction to the work of Carl Hampson

Despite a continuous pursuit of intellectual rigor and sophistication, elements of childhood preoccupations with lunar modules and cardboard mazes still fuel my ideas. These projects are both products and critiques of popular culture. They attempt to coexist within the diverging realms of speeding bullets and deliberating committees. In the attempt to transcend superficiality, there remains an undeniable urge to make something cool.

Carl Hampson

Born in England in 1965, Carl Hampson resides in Los Angeles where he has spent most of his life. He graduated from the School of Architecture at USC in 1990 and received a graduate degree in architecture from UCLA in 1994.

Born in England in 1965, Carl Hampson resides in Los Angeles where he has spent most of his life. He graduated from the School of Architecture at USC in 1990 and received a graduate degree in architecture from UCLA in 1994. Prior to graduate school he worked at DMJM in Los Angeles and with Eric Lloyd Wright in Malibu, California. In 1991 he paticipated in the implementation of Christoís Umbrellas Project.
In 1993, he was invited to join a competition design team lead by Dagmar Richter.

In 1994, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for Richard Hannum Associates and Stone Marraccini Patterson Architects. He returned to Los Angeles in 1997 to He received his Architectural license in 1997.

He has won recognition in various national and international architectural competitions. In 1993 he received an honorable mention in the Society of American Registered Architects Student Design Competition. He was awarded the second place prize as a member of dagmar richter Studio in the Royal Copenhagen library Competition in 1993. In 1996 he was awarded the San Francisco Prize with his partners for their second place winning entry in the Centering the Civic competition.

In 1995, he participated in Art by Architects, an exhibit on at the No Roof gallery in Phoenix Arizona. His sculpture explored the relationship between architecture and insects
