A search for beauty and meaning drives the work of John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects. Though an elusive, subjective pursuit, a few things seem to remain consistent: 1) an emphasis on space-making over object-making (a tricky distinction but one we insist on nevertheless); 2) the influence and inspiration of surrounding contexts; and 3) a sense of play, a sense of humor.

John Friedman & Alice Kimm

John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects is a four-person architectural design firm housed in the Helms Bakery complex in Los Angeles. The practice attempts both to build upon the partners’ shared design motivations and intuitions as well as to exploit their differing backgrounds and interests.

Alice Kimm received a B.A. in Economics from Cornell University in 1986 and an M.Arch. with Commendation from Harvard University in 1990. At Harvard, she served on the Editorial Board of the Harvard Architecture Review and was awarded a 1989 AIA Merit Award. More recently, Alice spent seven months in Asia as a Fulbright Scholar studying housing policy and design.

John Friedman received a B.S. in Architecture from MIT in 1983, where he was an All-American Water Polo Player and the first architecture student elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1986 he earned an M.A. in Philosophy and Political Theory from Oxford University, where he was Balliol College’s Newton Tatum Scholar. In 1990, following six months with Alvaro Siza’s office in Portugal, John received an M.Arch. with Distinction from Harvard University. He was awarded the Silver Medal by the AIA.

A mutual understanding of space-making and the design process led Ms. Kimm and Mr. Friedman to join forces in October 1993, when they participated in 12: An Exhibition of Ideas and Architecture. In 1995, they became full time partners and were finalists in the national design competition for a new Civic Center for Cathedral City, California. That same year they helped to found PLANE, a nonprofit organization that showcases work in architecture and related disciplines from outside of Los Angeles. In 1996 PLANE hosted an exhibit of the furniture and buildings of Alvaro Siza. John Friedman and Alice Kimm lectured on their work in the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design’s 1997 summer lecture series “Out There Doing It.” Both partners have served on the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Southern California. Alice Kimm currently teaches a design studio at SCI-Arc.

John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects has designed a wide variety of residential, commercial, and institutional projects in California and Asia. Currently under construction are a 50,000 square foot golf clubhouse in the mountains of Pusan, Korea; a 20,000 square foot six-story commercial building in Seoul; and a 1,200 square foot apartment renovation in Santa Monica. Reflecting their commitment to the design of affordable housing, they are presently working on a 47-unit SRO for senior citizens in midtown Los Angeles. Two single family dwellings, a public swimming pool, and a seven-story office building are also on the boards.
