As a philosophical approach, many things can be said about how the design process works. However, one thing is clear given the complexity of today’s architectural criteria and the impact on deriving meaningful solutions. This one overriding factor is the duality that lies between nature and reason, analysis and synthesis. it is here that an architect’s artistic sensibilities - imagination, intuition and creativity must be combined with the methodical and pragmatic abilities like those of an engineer or accountant. Things seen in an instant can prove to be as important as those developed or discovered throughout the duration of a project.

Each of Jose’s projects acknowledges precedent yet contains a fresh recognition of what is known and what has yet to be discovered. The basic formula in the work is a combination of clarity, rigor and profound awareness of the the importance of detail. The aesthetic value is rooted in tectonics and craft. Details are used in many ways, to ensure the geometrical integration of a plan, to express a material’s inherent nature, or to exalt the dialogue between solid and void. Equally important is the integration of systems and other practical requirements often considered as architectural nuisances or simply forgotten in the tectonic fabric of a building and therefore its aesthetic. Details rely on craft and precision rather than style to create the essence of the architecture.

Jose Palacios

Jose Palacios graduated with honors from Texas A&M University. His interests varied from physics and mathematics to philosophy and architecture, spending nearly nine years in academia in various institutions in South America, Europe and the United States. The influence of this experience is evident in the geometry, composition and precision of detail that characterizes his work.

Mr. Palacios has designed or contributed to the design of a remarkable number of constructed projects in his 12 years as an architect. During this time he has also had the opportunity to work on intriguing theoretical and major urban projects. One of these, the Alameda Corridor, will connect the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to rail transfer hubs near downtown Los Angeles. The urban planning of this project for which Mr. Palacios was senior designer was a challenging process involving politics at the city and community levels with concerns centering around previous architectural attempts directed toward beautification rather than true urban integration. A current project, a proposal for a new stadium near downtown Los Angeles, also carries with it enormous political, economic and social issues which of course significantly impact the architectural and planning process.
