Though inspired by the past, the firm actively seeks to disengage itself from present or previous styles and trends. Architecture is not a game of fashion. Architecture, when reduced to form-making is a bore. The making of buildings and space are acts of a complex cultural and synthetic process.

The firm was established in Los Angeles as a small office in 1987. It grew moderately, focusing on custom residential and small commercial projects. Not much got built as most of the projects were aborted due to the recession of the late 80’s and the early 90’s.
During the recession, the firm sustained itself providing consulting services to larger more established firms. At one point, the principals of the firm were employed in various other architectural offices. It was not until 1995, that the principals re-convened, joined forces and actually created the present business entity, specifically to embark upon a series of international competitions. Since then, the firm has grown and expanded its expertise. SPF:a still maintains providing services on small projects, but has also branched out into building larger entertainment/retail projects.
