V5: At the Milan show will other colleges have work there?

KL: Yes, I think every design college will be there and it is going to be a big show.

V5: There will also be the main manufactures at the show.

KL: Yes, so I made a name card and resumes in hopes that they will remember me. (laughs)

V5: You still have three more terms at Art Center before you graduate?

KL: I am taking academics next term, so four more to go.  Hopefully I can take an internship somewhere.

V5: What are some of the design influences you look towards for inspiration?  Do you work in a particular way?

KL: I like it to be as simple as possible and not have unnecessary things. I want to abstract everything and keep it simple. I try to be unique and build something that has not been done before.  To have something new so when people see it they feel like it is very unique and different from others.

Kelly’s two chairs will be seen with her class mates work in the Milano Exhibit - A working prototype chair  in 14 weeks!

( Infact two working prototypes in 14 weeks.)

V5: I think one of the rich parts of the design is that the two chairs work in line very well in that one chair creates a desk surface for the other chair.  I also think the chairs work well side by side and there is a wonderful negative space that comes through and makes a very articulate bench and that is very exciting in this design.

KL: I thought about how I can use the chair in as many ways as possible.  So you can see it four ways and can put them together in some kind of order for a group meeting.

V5: Have you shown the chair to outside manufacturers yet or is that what Milan is for?

KL: Milan will be about that. Patricia Oliver, who is my department chair, is talking about
making a few chairs to put in the student lounge and if I can interest manufacturers into making my chair, I will be happy to do it.  It can be made with different materials be more durable, such as plastics.

V5: That is something in front of you that you still need to investigate.  It is all very exciting and I will let you get back to work. Thank you Kelly.
