The Context
SCI-Arc is an independent non-profit school of architecture with a commitment to innovative, multi-disciplinary education. Its 450 students and 80 faculty members work collaboratively in a renovated industrial building in Los Angeles. This setting, in a city with such extreme social and environmental conditions is considered an asset and a vantage point from which to debate the nature of architecture, the future of cities, and the changing role of the architect. The school is situated only about a mile from the beach; it is directly across the street from the Baywatch Studios; it is on the same block as the now defunct Lannan Foundation gallery of contemporary art, and it is adjacent to the Howard Hughes property currently being considered for the Dreamworks mega-studio. The Visual Studies Program directed by Gary Paige is devoted to expanding studentsÕ aesthetic and conteptual vocabularies as might be integrated into SCI-ArcÕs ongoing process of re-defining and inquiring into the nature of contemporary archtitectural practice.
