The Project:
From the beginning, this class (Photo 2) was a collaborative project first, and secondly, a classroom situation for learning technical and conceptual material related to contemporary photography. Beginning with the condition that we were preparing an exhibition in the SCI-ARC long gallery, it followed that we were artists and the project would be a process of learning what that meant as we went along. The task would come first - conceptual challenges and technical solutions would be drawn from the challenges presented by the task as it was suggested through process. The subject was chosen (by the instructor in this case) as the subject of a film might be chosen if the crew suddenly found themselves on location with no script. That is to say, on the first day of class, we found ourselves in Los Angeles equipped with 35mm cameras and a small darkroom. What to do? Los Angeles would be treated as a kind of image factory from which images would be collected by re-photography. The activity would be photographic quoting from pop culture and museum representation.
