The Imagery
A short list of Los Angeles Museums was given to students as locations for photography and re-photography. This included the Museum of Jurassic Technology, the Hollywood Wax Museum, and the L.A. Museum of Natural History. A discussion followed about the concept of re-photography. Students would shoot with an eye for iconic images which had already been brought through multiple layers of interpretation by earlier photographic activity, or by museum staff who had fashioned their own particular brand of simulation based on photographic imagery.
As a second project, slides were shown of artists who have worked with the cinema and film stills. The slides accompanied a class discussion directed toward analyzing the codes within the cinematic image which distinguished film oriented work from straight photography or reportage. Lighting, camera angle, cropping, and dramatic gesture suggesting a narrative Ôexterior to the photographÓ were all considered. Students were then asked to improvise their own film stills. Most of these stills were printed on 30X40 mural paper to suggest the format of a movie poster.
